Golf Ireland have changed the process for determining Course Handicaps and Playing Handicaps. This was implemented in Ireland with effect from the 1st April 2024. The result will be larger changes in Handicaps depending on Par and Course Rating.
Golfers who wish to learn about the 2024 WHS Updates are advised to read the Player Reference Guide on the Rules of Handicapping which is available to download on the GI website

Course Rating – Par
New method of calculating Course Handicaps

Message from Golf Ireland

Due to a large number of queries received, we would like to share the following information regarding the CR-Par adjustment that was introduced as part of the 2024 Rules of Handicapping:

  • The CR-Par adjustment is applied to a player’s Course Handicap, i.e., it is not an adjustment to a player’s Handicap Index®.
  • The CR-Par adjustment is applied to the Course Handicap of all players, members and visitors alike. It is also applied for Competitions and General Play Scores.
  • The CR-Par adjustment will depend on the tees being played. If the CR is lower than Par, then the player will receive less shots. For example, on a course with a CR of 73.2 and a Par of 74, the player’s Course Handicap will be reduced by 0.8 (73.2 – 74 = -0.8).
  • If the CR is higher than Par, then the player will receive more shots. On a course with a CR of 75.2 and a Par of 74, the player’s Course Handicap will be increased by 1.2 (75.2 – 74 = 1.2).
  • The CR-Par adjustment is carried out before the Playing Handicap™is calculated.
